Charlotte Cornish
Artist’s Statement
I have been working professionally as a painter and printmaker for over 25 years, regularly exhibiting in a number of galleries and working with art consultants. I also undertake commissions and my work is held in numerous public, corporate and private collections.
During my degree at University of Brighton, UK, and postgraduate studies at The Slade School of Art and Central St Martins in London, I specialised in printmaking. My early interest and involvement with printmaking has informed my practice as a painter. I build my paintings using layers of paint, thinking of each layer, often poured, as a distinct element. Working with acrylic paint allows each of the layers to dry overnight. This gives me the opportunity to remove new painted layers or elements, without affecting the earlier work.
I have always made limited edition original prints, and more recently I have been making unique works on paper. These are made initially using a screen print monotype process, further developed with painted elements, creating images that combine the qualities of both of these mediums.
Inspiration for my work often comes from places I have visited and have significance to me. Taking photographs as a starting point, I then work on small studies. It is during this process that the images become abstracted. I am drawn to places full of intense atmosphere – colours, noises, smells, and I hope to capture something of these experiences in the work. I have always loved exploring the possibilities of colour and colour relationships and the infinite potential to create dynamic connections and reactions.Biography

Charlotte spent six years at art college, graduating in1990 from the University of Brighton with a degree in Fine Art, where she then went on to study at the Slade School of Art and Central St. Martin’s.
Charlotte finds her inspiration from places she has travelled to, using photographs of past trips as initial starting points for her compositions. Her works end up a mixture of elements from the visual world, with her own emotional responses and experience.
Charlotte explores both paint and print mediums working primarily with acrylic, screen print and lithograph. She prefers quick drying acrylic as it allows her to build up multiple layers in parts of her work, contrasting with directly applied, thicker marks.
She has been commissioned by a number of private and public institutions, producing work for John Lewis, Aviva Investors, Lloyd’s T.S.B and Aldi Stores. Her work is regularly exhibited at major art fairs and galleries across the UK.Awards
